DYF Outreach 2008

The Diabetes Youth Foundation of Indiana received funds from the Anthem Foundation to provide a truly unique youth leadership opportunity for older summer campers. The participants attended a two-week summer session. As part of the camp’s diabetes education program the participants learned leadership and presentation skills and created a school-based presentations on diabetes awareness. The DYF Outreach program challenged students to overcome obstacles and empower them to implement exciting and effective diabetes education programs in their community.

The primary goals of the program is: 1) to foster among students an understanding and appreciation for diabetes education; 2) to present positive examples of how diabetes education leads to a rich and rewarding life with diabetes; 3) to increase students’ content knowledge of diabetes education, leadership, and presentation skills; 4) To educate other students and teachers about diabetes and its effects, including how to help other students in school with diabetes and 5) to reach out to other students with diabetes and make them aware of the DYF’s camping programs.

Participants created a special “DYF Outreach” PowerPoint program, Diabetes Myth Busters Videos, and went on the Arizona Adventure trip. Special thanks to our volunteers: Angi Lyon and Eddie Cooper for providing medical support on the trip. Also, a special thanks to Thermo King for additional funding to support the program.
